If you have a low self-esteem your thoughts and feelings about yourself can be negative. You are more likely to think about your self-perceived weaknesses and be negatively judgemental about the things you do and any errors you make. Having a low self-esteem means the way you look at your entire life is affected. Your mental and physical health can suffer due to low self-esteem. Self-esteem and self-confidence
We often talk about having low ‘self-esteem’ or low ‘self-confidence’ to describe how we feel about ourselves. However, although self-confidence has an effect on our self-esteem, they are two different concepts. Self-confidence is the level of self-trust we have in our abilities, our judgement and our personal qualities. Your self-confidence level can be different from one situation to another. For example, you could be self-confident in academic fields, but not so much when it comes to sport or games. Self-esteem is how we feel about ourselves and tends to be the same from one situation to another. Your self-esteem is learned from your experiences and the situations that you have experienced in the past. All of these shape how you feel about yourself in the here and now.
So it is possible for you to be self-confident but to have low self-esteem – and vice versa. If you can learn to value yourself then it follows that your self-esteem will improve. This will make you feel more confident about yourself. When you have confidence in yourself you feel better about yourself. What could have caused me to feel this way
Most psychologists subscribe to the view that issues of confidence and esteem originate from childhood. The relationships we have in our childhood, parents, siblings, friends and teachers help us to form the opinion we have ourselves. We are told both positive and negative things about ourselves as we grow up, but it is usually the negative ones that stick in our minds. As we progress into adolescence the messages we are given can shape our perception of self-worth.
There has been much research to suggest that the media can be another source of low self-esteem among young people. You are subjected to People portrayed in the news and online as unrealistic ideals of beauty and success. This gives us feelings of self-doubt in our minds and makes us feel like we will never measure up to what is perceived as desirable. If you are struggling with low self-esteem, this promotes feelings of inadequacy and unworthiness.
